Antique gold ring wedding band Amsterdam 1755

This majestically adorned 18K yellow gold ring from 1755 chaperons you to a time of the indulgence and courtesy of the rococo period. Connected with filigree strand, knotted pyramids and flower patterns alternate all over this unique jewel. The filigree and dotted rims complete the frivolous suggestion of alluring possibilities and unexplored tides.

This ring was part of the exhibition "Nederlands Goud" (Dutch for "Dutch Gold") that was held in Utrecht, Netherlands from October 18th 1962 till December 1st in 1962. It is also depicted in the catalogue of this exhibition at page 41 with exhibition number 59. The ring then came from the collection of Mr.Ir.P.W.Voet, who is also known for his book on Dutch hallmarks. Even the Royal Dutch House lend their jewelry for this exhibition.

Style: Rococo - Rococo (less commonly roccoco) also referred to as "Late Baroque" is an 18th century style which developed as Baroque artists gave up their symmetry and became increasingly more ornate, florid, and playful. Rococo rooms were designed as total works of art with elegant and ornate furniture, small sculptures, ornamental mirrors, and tapestry complementing architecture, reliefs, and wall paintings. It was largely supplanted by the Neoclassic style. In 1835 the Dictionary of the French Academy stated that the word Rococo "usually covers the kind of ornament, style and design associated with Louis XV's reign and the beginning of that of Louis XVI". It includes therefore, all types of art produced around the middle of the 18th century in France.

Technique: Filigree (formerly written filigrann or filigrane) is a delicate kind of jewel work made with twisted threads usually of gold and silver or stitching of the same curving motifs. It often suggests lace and French from 1660 to the late 19th century. It should not be confused with ajoure jewellery work; while both have many open areas, filigree involves threads being soldered together to form an object and ajoure involves holes being punched, drilled, or cut through an existing piece of metal. Extra information: Betrothal rings were used during Roman times, but weren't generally revived in the Western world until the 13th century. The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.

Before the 20th century, other types of betrothal gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be frequently received a sewing thimble rather than a engagement ring. This practice was particularly common among religious groups that shunned jewelry. Engagement rings didn't become standard in the West until the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings didn't become common until the 1930s. Now, 80% of the women are offered a diamond ring to signify engagement. (from: Wikipedia)
