VINTAGE 'PARKER' PENCIL WITH ERASER.

George S. Parker was born in 1863 in Shullsburg, Wisconsin, only 69 miles from Janesville where he later built his pen empire. As a boy he worked on a farm while attending the nearby county school. Having graduated from upper Iowa University he entered the Valentine School of Telegraphy at Janesville. Within a year he was on the teaching staff. To supplement his income, in the late 1880's he obtained the agency of the John Holland Gold Pen Company, selling their fountain pens mostly to his students. Like many other pens of this period, they had poor feed systems which did not provide for a steady flow of air into the ink chamber while the ink flowed out. After receiving complaints of faulty pens from his students. Parker set out to produce a feed that would let air up more steadily. He purchased some simple tools, including a small scroll saw, a lathe, a cutter…. , and experimented until he produced a satisfactory feed which improved the perfomance of the John Holland pens. This succes encouraged him to produce his own pens.
