Antique gold enamel ring sentimental jewelry

Sentimental gold ring bearing the inscription "amitié" with enamel work. The feeling of love is celebrated with crown on each side of the center pattern and flowers running along the band.

Among antique jewelry that can be described as sentimental, a category is obvious: the ring. jewels of the 19th century had multiple functions loaded with symbolism: to show social status, wealth, religion and political beliefs. They are also a way to signify a feeling of love or friendship. At that time, no matter the materials they were made, the feeling prevailed over the desire to appear. Engravings are explicit "amitié" or friendship. It is important to note the ambiguity of the term "ami" in French. At the end of the 18th century, there was a sacredness of friendship and designated as the lover or the mistress...

Technique: Enamelling is an old and widely-adopted technology. The ancient Egyptians applied enamels to pottery and stone objects. The ancient Greeks, Celts, Russians, and Chinese also used enameling processes on metal objects. Enamel is the colorful result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating on metal, glass or ceramic. According to some sources, the word enamel comes from the High German word smelzan (to smelt) via the Old French esmail. Used as a noun, "an enamel" is a usually small decorative object, coated with enamel coating, such as a champlevé or a cloisonné (different techniques).

Hallmarks: The control mark here represents a horse’s head and was in use in Belgium from about 1831.
