Old brooches
how to use their long pin

The system explained here is the original way how in the olds day people used to secure their brooches. Over the years this system has gone out of use but in our opinion, once attached in this way there is no modern system more secure.

old brooches - how to use long pin Picture 3: First stick the pin all the way trough the textile so that the entire pin is at the back. Place the top part of the brooch over the textile to give you an idea of where the hook will be. The hook is the curved wire at the back were the pin goes through.

old brooches - how to use long pin Picture 5: Place the tip of your thumb to "mark" where the hook should come.

old brooches - how to use long pin Picture 6: Pull out the pin a bit to allow you to push the tip of the pin back through front of the textile at the place where the hook will be. Bring the pin through the front a little before the spot you marked; place and push it through to the back 5 to 6 mm after. You now have an exposed bit of pin on the front of the garment where the hook will be.

old brooches - how to use long pin Picture 7: This picture shows the position of the pin at the back of the textile. Notice at the right, the tip of the pin and the little place left of it where it is not visible. It is this place (on the other side of course) where you have to attach the hook.

Showing here is the front just before the attaching of the hook trough the little visible part of the pin.

Same situation as last picture but front view.

One more thing: be gentle and careful when trying to hook and unhook the brooch. It demands some skill and experience, but once you have the practice, satisfaction guaranteed.
