Reedmace and dragonfly in enamel, a small but poetic gold pendant from about 1920

A stylish pendant from about 1920, this delicate jewel blends the lingering poetry of Art Nouveau with the cleaner geometry that would soon define Art Deco. In yellow and white gold, it is designed as a dragonfly resting among reedmace, its wings picked out in softly shaded enamel and its body enlivened by a single seed pearl. Small in scale yet finely observed, it carries something of the stillness and light of waterside nature.

Theme
A dragonfly on reedmace.
The dragonfly has long held a place in art, folklore, and decorative design. In European tradition it was at times linked with darker superstition, while in Japan it became a far more positive emblem, associated with courage, strength, happiness, and the changing seasons.

In the decorative arts, and especially in Art Nouveau jewellery, the dragonfly became a beloved motif because of its lightness, elegance, and natural grace. Here, shown on reedmace, it evokes the quiet poetry of waterside nature.

Technique
Enamelling.
Enamelling is an ancient decorative technique in which powdered glass is fused to a surface by heat, creating a smooth and often richly coloured coating. It has been used in many cultures for centuries and became especially valued for the brilliance, delicacy, and variety it could bring to metalwork and jewellery.

In jewellery, enamelling made it possible to introduce colour, contrast, and fine ornamental detail in ways that paint alone could not achieve. Its lasting appeal lies in the combination of artistry, precision, and durability.
