A Rare Table Cut Diamond Ring from Around 1650

Dating from around 1650, this Renaissance to Baroque ring is a rare survival of early diamond jewellery. Its restrained gold and silver construction holds six table cut diamonds and one rose cut diamond, their quiet brilliance enhanced by the historic foil backed setting. Probably of Belgian origin, the ring is valued here less for ornament than for the early stones that help place it so convincingly in the 17th century.

Style

Baroque - Baroque is an artistic style that dominated much of Europe from the late 16th century to the early 18th century. In jewellery, this period is associated with rich ornament, strong visual presence, hand-made settings and early diamond cuts such as table cuts, which give jewels of this age their distinctive, restrained brilliance.

Baroque jewellery belongs to a period in European art and decoration that developed shortly before 1600 and remained influential until the emergence of Rococo around 1730. This ring is most probably placed within the Baroque period because of its early diamond cuts, especially the table-cut stones, rather than because of pronounced Baroque ornament. Although the ring itself is restrained in form and does not display the rich decoration often associated with Baroque design, its stones and construction are consistent with a 17th century attribution.
