Words inscribed on some articles of jewelry to record information about the circumstances in which the piece was made or used (e.g. mourning jewelry; commemorative jewelry) or to set forth some relevant motto (e.g. serjeant ring) or, more often, some sentimental expression (e.g. posy ring; wedding ring). Some Saxon finger rings bear inscriptions stating the name of the owner.
