The badge or insigne worn by a member of any of various types of orders, such as the orders of royalty, nobility or merit, e.g. Order of the Garter, Order of the Thsitle, Order of the Bath. The badges were usually ornately enamelled and set with gemstones. Sometimes articles of jewelry were made in general style of an order and worn as an ornamental piece. Such orders exist in a great number of countries.
