The process of smoothing the enamel used in making work with cloisonné, champlevé, plique à jour or basse taille decoration, done by means of rubbing with a stone (after initial smoothing by filling) until a uniformly even surface has been achieved. Sometimes a piece with transparent enamel must be refired to provide a glazed surface, and finally the piece is buffed.
